Long long Ago...
John was born in beautiful Monterey, California more specifically the Fort Ord U.S. Army post however he lived most of his pre-college years in Ankeny, Iowa. After high school graduation (Go Hawks ;-))he received a BA in English and BS in Computer Science from University of Iowa and after a few years of work at CDS he returned to school to get a MS in Computer Science from Iowa State University
Work
John's work is leading teams that build software with a bias towards applying cutting edge technology to first generation products. This requires a much more hands on management style with an understanding of current technology. For more details you can check out the resume(s) linked on the right side of the page.
John currently is working in the Research group at SAP. He joined research to organize a new lab but due to internal politics this was postponed until 2010 but for now he is working on a lot of fun projects that allow him to dabble in technology, new business development and strategy. Lots of fun but he misses leading teams and delivering product.
Fun
When John isn't working for SAP he amuses himself with a myriad of hobbies.
Top of the list is baking. He has taken a number of semi-professional
baking courses
Wood Fired Baking Course at King Arthur Baking Center and tries to bake someting new each week, particularly the sourdough whole grain
breads favored by Patti Jo. He just finished a
wood fired oven on the porch which is the latest baking tool. He also restarted his cheesemaking hobby
to have something to put on the bread.
More geekie hobbies include using the computer to work with multimedia content development tools such as Adobe Flash, Photoshop and Premiere, Animation Master, and panoramic digital photography as well as open source collaboration servers to serve up the content. Some of this is in conjunction with my volunteer work with the Groton Channel. He is also working with the arduino microprocessor on various projects and has a bunch of scanning radios including the Winradio 305e software defined radio.
Outdoors
Finally there are the more "organic" hobbies to grown things and explore the beautiful
outdoors in Groton including
hydroponic gardening,
Hydroponic Room mycology and outside gardening during the summer.
Lately I have been mixing technology and the outdoors by using GIS/GPS/Computer mapping technology and
applying it to the
hiking trails in town.
Dormant hobbies include rockets and radio controlled helicopters and flight simulation.
